2013 Impala Check Engine light

And Bob's your Uncle

One more Impala tale.

The remote start wouldn’t work. I knew that a check engine light would prevent remote start. But had not seen and check engine light.

Went to parts store that will check trouble codes free. They found a whole list. What? Why no check engine light?

Well that light should come on when you first turn on ignition, everything else does. But not that one. Burned bulb? Searching car parts web sites did not say what bulb – that’s suspicious.

Found you tube on removing the instrument cluster. Not bad, did that. Got cluster out, open it up look inside, no bulbs all leds

So, not wanting to jump in blind and buying a replacement cluster ( they are as low as $25 on eBay) decided to think on it a while.

Now that I have that cd with repair info on my Impala, I looked at that schematic. All the other leds except that one seem to be on data leads but this one has a separate wire that appears to be active if one an several things short that wire to ground, a lot like the dome lights, so any of several switches can turn them on.

So I’ll take the dash back open and see if that wire is grounded with the key on or if grounding it with the key on makes the led light. The results will determine what needs to be done. And Bob’s your uncle.

Update – appears that the power to the check engine light is the same bad wire that caused the fuel pump module error and the low ign Sw voltage error. Fixing that wire also fixed the light. All fixed. Got the emissions check done today. All good for two years.
